Help Stop Platte River Water Diversion

Once again the Platte River needs everyone’s help to defend the water that remains in the river for wildlife and for people.

As you all may have heard, the Central Nebraska Public Power and Irrigation District along with the Lower Republican NRD and the Tri-Basin NRD have filed an application with the Department of Natural Resources to transfer water from the Platte River to the Republican River in order to meet the state's obligations for water to Kansas. For many reasons this is detrimental to the Platte River and all of the wildlife and the people that rely upon it for water.

The cities of Kearney, Grand Island, Lincoln, and Omaha utilize the Platte for water. This transfer will permanently remove water and send it to Kansas that could be used for future use in the basin in Nebraska. We are asking you to write letters and call the city administrators that you are associated with and ask them to formally oppose this water transfer. You can also make comments directly to DNR as per the instructions attached. Also attached below are some background information and the actual application for your review. SEE ATTACHMENTS BELOW.
