Kelly grew up near Minnesota’s scenic St. Croix River amidst a dazzling abundance of wildlife and outdoor opportunities. There are few experiences that can attune a child’s eye to subtle movement and patterns quite like sitting in a fishing boat from sun-up to sun-down. The long, quiet days immersed in nature fostered curiosity, wonder, and a deep appreciation for the natural world and those who protect it.
In 2002 Kelly moved to Fargo, North Dakota to attend North Dakota State University and earn a Bachelor of Arts in English Education. Then, in 2014 she completed a Master of Science in Education through Valley City State University.
Outdoor adventures seen through the eyes of her two children delighted her and reinforced the importance of environmental education and foundational outdoor experiences—both planned and spontaneous. Their family decided to become an active with Scouting America and Kelly has served in multiple capacities in her children’s Packs and Troops. Kelly worked in the field of public education for nearly two decades as a teacher and administrator, but it’s always been in her heart to share with others what has been most beloved and nurturing to her heart throughout all seasons of her own life—environmental education. She looks forward to supporting and planning nature-focused experiences that educate, empower, and spark curiosity.
The White-breasted Nuthatch is her favorite local bird, its agile movement up and down tree trunks is impressive to behold. The Atlantic Puffin is her favorite non-local bird; she hopes to visit a nesting colony in the future.
