Rocky Mountain Juniper Tree Removal

Manage woody encroachment - Improve grasslands

Rocky Mountain Juniper is native to western North Dakota. Juniper management is not juniper eradication, the number of trees left on the site should be based on location of old growth trees occurring on the site and treatment objectives. Machinery removal of Rocky Mountain Juniper only sets the plant age time scale back; so the period following removal is the most imperative phase for long-term control of invasive trees like the Rocky Mountain Juniper. Without the use of prescribed fire, the years of seed stock will develop into a higher density population of cedar than before removal.

In areas where major infestations of woody plants are present like the Rocky Mountain Juniper it may be necessary to use heavy machinery like a shredder or backhoe to control them first.

The following is a brief list of methods used to control small Rocky Mountain Juniper tress and re-sprouts.

Prescribed Burning: eliminates seed and small tress

  • Does require adequate fuel and timing

Mechanical Treatment (Hand Tools) Does not eliminate seed

  •  Loppers, tree shears, chainsaws etc can be used on small diameter trees. Any green juniper leaf material must be removed otherwise rapid regrowth will occur. Trees need to be cut below the bottom most branch for complete kill.

Herbicide (follow all label directions/precautions)

  • Pre-emergent/Post emergent: Hexazinone
  • Post Emergent – Tebuthiuron, Picolram, or Tricopyr

Haying/Mowing

  • Only used for plant height control
    • Follow up with other management options

Revegetation

After managing Rocky Mountain Juniper infestations, desirable vegetation may need to be reestablished
